LEDs, LEDs, LEDs - the big issue in the field of equipping special and emergency vehicles
Lighting expert Hella is further expanding its LED product range for vehicle requirements of different commercial target groups
Article of 11.06.2010
Lippstadt, June 2010. LED technology continues to advance in the field of equipping special and emergency vehicles such as agricultural and construction vehicles, buses, caravans, traction vehicles and trailers. Lighting expert Hella is one of those pushing this process and continually expanding its LED product range. Because the high demands made on vehicles used commercially, can be met particularly well with the aid of LED technology. LEDs have an extremely long service life of at least 10,000 operating hours - thus significantly beating halogen bulbs (around 500 hours) and Xenon (around 1,000 hours). The LED products designed by Hella stand out particularly thanks to their resistance to vibrations, soiling and water. This advantage pays off in the form of significant cost savings especially for commercially operated vehicles that are often in continuous operation. No follow-on costs for spare parts requirements, maintenance costs and downtimes are incurred, for example. The use of LED technology also has positive effects on profitability and the environmental balance on account of the reduced fuel consumption and lower CO2 emissions. In addition, LEDs also offer vehicle manufacturers additional degrees of freedom with regard to design and styling.
With the OneLED Hella is offering side marker lamps, position and clearance lamps using LED technology from fully automated assembly for the first time - for 12 and 24 Volt applications, which means they are suitable for caravans, buses, traction vehicles, trailers, light commercial vehicles and vehicle body manufacturers Thanks to the combination of efficient light emitting diodes (LEDs) and precision lenses, Hella's OneLED is setting standards in terms of energy consumption - it achieves the light distribution prescribed by legislation using 80 percent less energy than conventional bulb-type lights. The fully automatic production of the OneLED and its sealing with plastic result in higher quality, reliability and longer service life. Thanks to optimised thermal management, it has a service life of 30,000 hours and more even under adverse conditions. In addition to the 12 Volt and 24 Volt side marker lamp variants, position lamp and clearance lamp are also available in the same design. Different coloured frame variants in white, orange, grey and black round off the range. The lamp can be integrated in any vehicle design. But it is also following the trend in the automobile industry of emphasising lighting elements - in particular in night-time design - in terms of style: The large-surface, bright and homogenous illumination of the whole lens from all observation angles creates optimum visibility and thus maximum safety.
Particularly for traction vehicles, buses, caravans and mobile homes, Hella supplies round, LED lights 83 millimetres in size for the combined functions daytime running light, indicator and position light. The bright white light increases visibility for oncoming vehicles at very low energy consumption of less than 4 Watts. The lamp has been designed especially for professional use under the aspect "fit & forget". Once installed, the lamp works without a hitch for a whole vehicle lifetime. Its lens is particularly sturdy and insensitive to UV beams as well as chemical influences. The light is vibration-resistant and completely sealed - in other words protected from soiling and water (resistant to high-pressure jet cleaners). The lamp can be operated at voltages between 18 and 32 Volts, making it suitable for the 24 Volt commercial vehicles and bus ranges. It is already in use in New Zealand and Australia, the ECE-approved light will also be available in Germany from May 2010.
Hella is also expanding its range of optical warning systems through more products based on LED technology for vehicles using amber beacons in the fields of towing services, the construction industry, disposal, heavy-duty transport and municipal services. The outstanding features of the new ECE-certified LED beacon K-LED FO are its aerodynamic design and high energy efficiency (power consumption 20 Watts / operating voltage 10 to 30 Volts); with the Fresnel lens guaranteeing ideal light output. The use of LED technology also significantly increases economic efficiency, because costly light source changing and thus expensive, time-consuming replacement and vehicle downtimes become a thing of the past. In addition, the flat, sturdy beacon is insensitive to vibration and impact, and thus particularly reliable for applications where intensive oscillation is involved. A wide range of flashing sequences can be programmed thanks to the powerful electronics, whereby voltage peaks are avoided. The extremely short reaction time guarantees optimum warning effectiveness and maximum safety right from switch-on. Different attachment possibilities - with a choice of fixed attachment, rubber base or magnetic version - make the K-LED FO suitable for flexible use for a wide range of different application purposes.
With the new LED worklamps Hella Power Beam 1.000 and 2.000 Hella is still supplying two particularly powerful variants for close-range illumination. Developed especially for heavy-duty applications, they are ideal for agricultural and construction machinery, trucks and trailers and municipal vehicles, bringing increased power, economy and working efficiency. The Power Beam lamps stand out thanks to their particularly sturdy design, are resistant to vibration, 100 percent waterproof and dustproof, suitable for multi-voltage use and low power consumption as well as a low temperature at the lens. They are also absolutely maintenance-free once installed. There are six high-power LEDs working in the LED worklamp Hella Power Beam 1.000, generating 850 lumen of light output and thus achieving homogenous illumination in a colour similar to daylight (6,500 Kelvin). The Power Beam 2.000 surpasses the properties of the 1.000 version: Thanks to the light power from 16 high-power LEDs, it provides 2,000 lumen and ensures illumination similar to daylight of 6,000 Kelvin. This is not only good for the human eye, it also leads to improved visibility in the dark, and thus more efficient and less tiring work.
